Nuwave Alcohol Free Pale Ale is part of the British brand’s range of alcohol-free beers, which take a slightly different approach by incorporating botanical ingredients and postbiotics alongside more conventional brewing ingredients.
Having already looked at Nuwave’s lager, I’m interested to see how the pale ale compares, particularly whether the different beer style brings more noticeable hop character and complexity. As always, I’ll be considering the appearance, aroma, flavour, mouthfeel and finish, and whether the additional ingredients have any noticeable influence on the drinking experience.
Appearance:
Quite a deep orange/amber. A nice carbonation and decent long-lasting head that clings to the glass. It’s a lovely lively looking beer.
Nose:
A nice strong set of flavours including citrus, malt and hops, Lilt-esque tropical fruits and THAT FUNK! I can only assume it’s from those additional botanicals and bacteria?!
Taste:
A little fizz, quite a pleasant syrupy mouthfeel and some welcome sweet caramel, honey and stewed red berry and custard. This beer does have that funky taste but nowhere near as off-putting as it is with the Lager.
After a time there is a blood orange bitterness and some golden syrup.
Finish:
Golden syrup, berries and honey all last a little while. There’s a little bitterness but it’s all nicely balanced.
Overall:
I prefer this to the lager from Nuwave, it has a deeper flavour profile and it’s got a better balance. The funk is still there but it’s faint.
Drink With:
In the garden in the Autumn sun.
Would I buy Again?:
Possibly, it wouldn’t be top of my list though.
