Lucky Saint German Weissbier

Lucky Saint German Weissbier

Lucky Saint German Weissbier is an alcohol-free wheat beer inspired by the traditional German Weissbier style. It’s a departure from the brand’s better-known lager, and one I’m interested in exploring to see how its approach translates to a different type of beer.
German wheat beers are typically associated with a cloudy appearance, a soft, rounded mouthfeel and distinctive fruity and spicy notes, often including banana and clove. I’ll be looking at how closely Lucky Saint follows those characteristics, how the sweetness and carbonation balance, and whether it offers the sort of flavour and body I’d expect from a traditional Weissbier.

Lucky Saint German Weissbier is brewed in Bavaria using wheat malt, barley malt, hops and yeast. It’s unfiltered, suitable for vegans and contains gluten.

Appearance:

Pours very true to a German beer, with a frothy head and a nice hazy, dark amber-coloured body. The head is slow to reduce.

Nose:

Definitely hoppy, with a little tobacco, orchard fruits, particularly plum, some apple and pastry too. The nose isn’t particularly strong given that it’s supposed to be a German beer.

Taste:

Quite a nice viscous mouthfeel but my immediate impression is that the flavour profile is one-dimensional, with no depth to speak of, just a bit sharp.
Quite honey sweet with sharp green apple, the tobacco and the plum now consistent with the nose. There’s also an earthy vegetal undertone now which at least adds that missing additional layer.

Finish:

The apple sharpness, honey and plums all last a short while. The earthy note is there too but very faint.

Overall:

Hmm, I’m conflicted with this one. There’s nothing ‘wrong’ or unpleasant about it, but it just doesn’t offer anything to get me to buy another one, unfortunately.
It should be mentioned that it pours very well and looks really inviting as a glass of beer!

Drink With:

Pub lunch

Would I buy Again?:

Maybe give it one more go.
