Mash Gang Lesser Evil has been created as a full-flavoured, dessert-style stout rather than a traditional dry stout, with a thick, creamy mouthfeel and a satisfying dry finish. Mash Gang suggests serving it cool rather than very cold, allowing the chocolate, cherry and vanilla aromas to come through.
Appearance:
Very dark purple, almost black, only the head draws attention to the slightly unusual colour. The head lasts as the pint is consumed. A little more gassy than the usual stout.
Nose:
Black Forest gâteau, faint milky coffee, some floral notes and a little vegetal too. The nose is a little reminiscent of medicinal aromas of Blackcurrant Tunes (if you remember those!?).
Taste:
Definite cherry, the chocolate is there but a little subdued by the stronger fruit notes. It’s a sweet jammy flavour profile which I like, nothing like any stout I’ve ever tasted, I would class this as an entirely different drink.
The coffee element, vanilla and more chocolate come through stronger the more that I drink.
Finish:
The sweet jam notes of cherry and chocolate last a little time, not that long though.
Overall:
It’s nice in a very different cider or perry type of way, if you’re in the mood for one of those then this would suit, not if you fancy a traditional stout though.
Drink With:
BBQ or snacks
Would I buy Again?:
I would as a summer drink but if I was given this blind I’d think it was just a fizzy fruit drink, so it’s not really for when I fancy any type of beer. That’s the problem, it seems like an expensive fizzy fruit drink.
