Athletic Brewing’s Free Wave Hazy IPA is a non-alcoholic IPA built around a soft, hazy body and plenty of hop character. Brewed with Amarillo, Citra and Mosaic hops, it brings together citrus and tropical aromas with juicy fruit, pine and floral notes, while wheat and oats help give it a smooth, velvety mouthfeel.
At less than 0.5% ABV, Free Wave is designed to offer the fuller, hop-forward experience associated with a modern hazy IPA without the alcohol. Athletic Brewing describes it as particularly juicy and aromatic, with 50 IBUs giving it a noticeable bitterness.
Appearance:
The initial pour does produce a decent head, but it quickly disappears. A light gold and hazy liquid.
Nose:
Strong hops and citrus bitterness (akin to lime pickle), fruit salad sweets and pineapple. This one has strong aromas which is reassuring prior to tasting and very inviting.
Taste:
Bitter, possibly edging into sour, malty and lemon notes, honey and tropical fruits. It’s a nice balance of plenty of flavour to explore and also providing a refreshing beer.
Possibly some red apple appears towards the finish.
Finish:
The red apple, tropical fruits and bitterness remain for a short amount of time. The lemon peel is the last flavour standing.
Overall:
It’s ok, not something I’d choose to drink as it’s a little too bitter lemon for me.
Drink With:
Roast dinner or Italian
Would I buy Again?:
Probably not
