Clausthaler Dry Hopped is a German alcohol-free beer that was one of the first non-alcoholic beers to use dry-hopping. It is brewed with American Cascade hops, which give it a distinctive citrus and floral character alongside a fuller malt profile and hints of caramel.
At less than 0.5% ABV, it is amber in colour and left unfiltered, helping retain its fuller character. The combination of malty sweetness, Cascade hop aroma and citrus bitterness gives it more character than a straightforward alcohol-free lager.
Appearance:
Dark Amber, nice and hazy. A strong long lasting head forms when poured and still remained on the side of the glass after the beer was finished. A few wispy streams of bubbles rise from the bottom of the glass.
Nose:
Tropical fruits, golden syrup, hops and some citrus.
Taste:
The bitter note, almost sour, is a little too prominent initially for my liking. A sweeter syrup and jam layer does start to appear and balance the beer out after a few more sips though, thankfully. The more you drink, the brighter and more jam-like the beer becomes.
Finish:
Fairly long. The sweet element is the strongest, raspberry jam and honey, alongside some malt and hops. There is a slightly astringent layer which I’m not fond of, but it’s faint thankfully.
Overall:
This beer grew on me the more I drank. I reckon after a few bottles you’d be on to a pretty decent all-rounder.
Drink With:
Olives and pistachios.
Would I buy Again?:
Possibly if choice was limited.
