Drop Bear Yuzu Pale Ale is a 0.5% ABV alcohol-free pale ale from Welsh brewery Drop Bear Beer Co. It combines a light, crisp pale ale base with the distinctive citrus character of yuzu, a Japanese citrus fruit known for its aromatic, tangy flavour. At 0.5% ABV, Yuzu Pale Ale is designed to be light and refreshing rather than heavy or intensely bitter. The addition of yuzu gives it a distinctive citrus element.
Appearance:
A light brief head does form and there is a little bubble activity but it feels quite flat opening the can and pouring this one.
A nice mid-tone amber, no haze.
Nose:
A nice balanced nose is my immediate impression, which is positive. Sweeter notes of honey, light malt and stewed fruits, some underlying tropical notes too.
There’s also baking spices/pastry and bread layers in the background. It’s a good start!
Taste:
The baking elements carry on into the palate, sweeter notes follow and are now a little reminiscent of Irn-Bru or Tizer. A little citrus bitterness but nothing that ever gets close to being dominant or off-putting. Again, as with the nose, this has a nice balance of flavours.
Finish:
All of the above last a short while, particularly the Tizer and tropical notes and slight bitterness.
Overall:
I like this one. I appreciate the balance and baking elements. The tropical fruits and slightly sour edge work well too. It’s an easy sipper but with enough going on to keep you interested and exploring aromas and flavours.
Drink With:
Olives, bread and cheese.
Would I buy Again?:
I would, and probably will, yes.
