Nirvana Stout

Nirvana Stout

Nirvana Stout is an alcohol-free dark beer from London’s Nirvana Brewery, a specialist producer of low- and no-alcohol beers. It offers a change from the brewery’s lighter lager styles, drawing on the traditional stout’s emphasis on roasted malt, darker flavours and a fuller mouthfeel.

Having already tried Nirvana’s PILS and Helles lagers, I’m interested to see how the brewery handles a stout, particularly how much depth and body it can achieve with very little alcohol. I’ll be looking at the balance of roasted malt, bitterness and sweetness, along with its texture and finish, to see how it compares with other alcohol-free stouts I’ve sampled.

Nirvana updated its stout recipe in January 2026, switching from nitrogen to CO₂ carbonation and refining the malt profile. The brewery describes chocolate, roasted coffee, toasted grain and subtle vanilla characteristics.

The current beer is vegan and certified gluten-free, although its ingredients include barley, wheat and oats.

Appearance:

Nice and lively when poured, creating a smooth, frothy head. A dark, almost black liquid with a slight ruby-red tint. The head recedes slowly, leaving lacing around the top of the glass.

Nose:

Roasted coffee, chocolate ice cream, leather and dusty bookshelves hit first on the nose. These notes are followed by some light bonfire smoke, a little sharpness from cherry and petrichor.

Nirvana Stout
Taste:

The taste is surprisingly zingy and nothing like the nose would lead you to believe. Dark chocolate, the smoky element, an earthy/mineral flavour that I can’t put my finger on, but like and a definite fruit sharpness, like raspberry or blackberry (possibly loganberry). The mineral note in particular gains prominence the more you drink. A little bitterness underpins the other flavours, but not too strong and nicely balanced.

It’s not as smooth or viscous as Guinness, for instance, but still a nice mouthfeel and texture.

Finish:

The smoke, roasting coffee beans, slight bitterness and mineral element all last a little while. It also leaves the mouth a little dry.

Overall:

I like it. I like the surprise twist between what you think you’ll taste based on the nose and what the flavour profile actually is. It’s well balanced and contains some interesting and complementary flavours.

Drink With:

Pork scratchings.

Would I buy Again?:

Quite possibly if I saw it in a supermarket. I wouldn’t order it specifically though.
